Finding an Antidote to Shame & Self-Criticism |
|
In Ottawa & Toronto, the workshop runs from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm both days. In Vancouver, it runs from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm on the first day, and 8:30 am to 4:00 pm on the second. Lunch is included with registration in all cities and is served from 12:00 to 1:15 daily.
DAY ONE
Introduction to the model ¨ Explore why a compassion-focused therapy can be helpful. This will include looking at the typical patients who have difficulties with the standard therapies. ¨ Outline some of the neuroscience behind the approach, including the different types of positive affect systems, such as an activating positive affect system and a soothing one (the “Three Circle” model), as well as the impact of ”old brain/new brain” on human nature and suffering.
Conceptualizing shame and self-criticism ¨ Investigate the various presentations and functions of shame and self-criticism. How do we identify them and why do people become trapped in them?
Formulating shame and self-criticism in terms of safety strategies
¨ Distinguishing self-esteem from self-compassion, and self-criticism from self-correction ¨ Conduct exercises and practice sessions focusing on the following elements: historical influences, key fears, safety behaviours, and unintended consequences, as well as an understanding of their inter-relationships. Collaborative formulation itself becomes a deshaming exercise.
DAY TWO
Considering the nature of self-compassion ¨ Focus on the various definitions of self-compassion, a component analysis of compassion and ways to introduce compassion-focused work. ¨ The role of compassion in the therapeutic relationship
Developing self-compassion in therapy (“Compassionate Mind Training”) ¨ The differences between Compassion Focused Therapy and Compassionate Mind Training. Participants will have an opportunity to practise some techniques, including body enactment and compassionate letter-writing, consider problems in applying these, and discuss solutions.
Deepening self-compassion ¨ Explore more detailed ways of using compassionate imagery with individuals and in groups
